Prometheus Bound

In the painting above we can see that the character in focus is in immense pain. From the way in which his veins are bulging, the way his face is writhing in agony and the way he seems to be trying to shake the eagle on top of him. The person in this painting is Prometheus, currently being punished for stealing fire and giving it back to mortals. Fire, that Zeus had taken it from mortals. Prometheus in a heroic act gets it back, but is in turn punished for it. It is a painting that symbolises Prometheus’s sacrifice, despite this gruelling punishment it is important to note that Prometheus is set free after about 30,000 years and is remembered for his sacrifices through the act of wearing a ring. Symbolising what he has to wear afterwards for Zeus to let him go, a ring.
