The Swing

We can see that in the image there are three people; a woman, the man pushing her and the man hidden in the bushes. The painting is hinting at the relationship between the woman on the swing and the man hidden within the bushes. While you might not see it first, hidden within the painting is a cupid sculpture shushing - hinting at the scandalous relationship of the two.
The setting of the swing gives us more clues, people within this era would swing in mid-afternoon while there was a comfortable breeze to escape the brutal heat of the summer. The background colours of the painting suggests that this swinging is taking place much later, after the sun has gone down. Hinting at activities that are indulged after the sun has gone down.
